about us

Sabukan was born as a reaction to the overdesigned and over featured products I worked on as a contractor. While working on my fair trade family sewing coop in Yúcatan, Mexico, I was struck by the ubiquity of the traditional sabukan, an ancient bag design that is the go-to carry solution to this day: a square, with a strap, made of durable materials. The flagship product was a modern telling of that classic employing the best materials out there: durable, waterproof laminates from the sailing world, beefy milspec webbing, and water resistant zippers from my own technical softgoods industry. No gadgets, no widgets, no fussy detailing. I was very much taken with Antoine de Saint Exupéry's quote:

"Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away."

Being a reaction, that first collection was perhaps a bit overly simple, but as a fan of Donald Judd and Tadao Ando, I was happy with the minimalism. A bit more mature and less petulant in my work, I have embraced appropriate detail and complexity and that comes through in the new generation of products. I hope you love them.
